In June 2010 Ro and Mia McGhee welcomed sextuplets – four sons and two daughters. The couple had been trying to fall pregnant for 10 years and were blown away when they finally got the news they were expecting!
Naturally, they weren’t expecting to expand their family by six, but, miracles happen every day and the precious sixsome is certainly proof of this!
After years of trying to conceive naturally, and after a first pregnancy that ended tragically, Rozonno and Mia McGhee were about to be blessed, not only with one child but with a magnificent set of six.
After almost giving up on their dream, and after embracing the fact that they will never be parents, the McGhees became one of the most famous ones in Columbus, Ohio, as no other sextuplet family has ever been recorded there before.
Mia’s and Rozonno’s Story
Mia and Rozonno had their fair share of bad luck when it came to building their own family. The most private moments of Mia’s life had to be exposed to doctors and she was almost deprived of her biggest purpose in life.
We want to take you back to the early days of this astonishing story, where it all began and weaved its shape. Even today, more than a decade later, these six children (and parents) continue to amaze us. This is their story.
At the Begining
Rozonno and Mia McGhee go back many years. They met when they were both in their teens. It was love at first sight and Mia knew straight away that Rozonno was the one with whom she would fulfill her biggest dream — becoming a mother.
Forming a strong and happy family was her biggest wish in life, as she herself came from a single-parent household. She knew early in life that she would be the best mother there is, and knew Rozonno would complete her. Together they would bring new lives into this world.
A Single Parent House Hold
Mia grew up only with her mother. She can recall being a little girl, fantasizing about her big day and about the family she would eventually have.
She knew deep inside that the man she marries would have to be a strong and supportive person, and that her partner for the journey of life, would share the same dream as her and want a big family, more than anything else in the world.
Going by the Book
Mia was the love of Rozonno’s life. She first wanted to graduate school and do her years in college before taking the path of parenthood in life, and so it was. The couple married not long before Mia’s 20th birthday and the next chapter of their lives was about to begin.
Six little Angels
The family of 8 made headlines back in 2010 when the McGhee’s posed for an adorable photoshoot of all six babies asleep on their dad. Elijah, Isaac, Josiah, Rozonno Jr, Madison, and Olivia are the first sextuplets ever born in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio and fame have followed the family ever since.
The family was featured on Oprah and soon landed a TV series – “Six Little McGhees,” which ran on OWN — the Oprah Winfrey Network — for three seasons from 2012 through 2014.
Their first reality show was followed by two seasons of “Growing Up McGhee,” another show which ran from 2015 through 2017 on UPtv.
Six years later…
And, in 2016, the family re-created their 2010 viral photo, capturing a second image of the then almost 6-year-olds wide awake while their dad, presumably exhausted from chasing six kids around, slept soundly.
And now!
It’s hard to believe that the sextuplets are now tweens and headed off to the seventh grade in August 2022 (remember they are in America where school starts in August/September). Mia and Ro also chose to hold the sextuplets back a year when they were a bit younger.
The 11-year-olds have already carved their own paths and mumma, Mia tells TODAY Parents,
They have their own opinions, personalities and identities … Each one is an individual and it’s amazing and crazy to watch. The house is in a frenzy and the once-had-it-together parents are taking each day one at a time and picking our battles wisely.”
Any mum who has a tween can certainly understand this. Eye rolls and attitude for days. And now, times that by SIX!
Many people ask me if it’s easier now that they’re older, but I beg to differ,” added Mia. “The older age and their awareness makes it difficult and, oh my goodness, my kids are everywhere at the same time. Our household as it stands today is in a bit of an uproar. It truly is Ro and I against them.”
See what it's really like raising sextuplets - this mum takes us behind the scenes in her hectic household!
The family is now enjoying life outside of the spotlight with Mia working as a realtor and Ro owning a carpet cleaning company.
The family drives a 12-passenger van and lives in a four-bedroom home – two children per bedroom. The girls share a room and the boys have the other two rooms.
Ro and I are literally figuring this thing called ‘parenthood times six’ out.
I love their love for each other. They fight hard but they love even harder. I call it built-in best friends.”
FAM
At the end of the day, the love, respect, and beliefs they have for one another keep them going, and no matter what challenges surprise them in life, anything is possible. They never forget that dreams can come true.
